Imagine a computer learning to understand hand signs without knowing who makes them. This study shows a new method that combines two techniques: Markov Chains and a Niching Genetic Algorithm (NGA). Markov Chains track movement sequences, while the genetic algorithm optimizes transition probabilities. The algorithm uses Context-Based Clearing to keep many diverse solutions and avoid early stopping. This helps the model learn varied signing styles and work better with unknown users. Tests show lower errors and higher accuracy than traditional systems. The work paves the way for more inclusive assistive devices and better communication between deaf and hearing people.

The proposed framework combines a Markov Chain model with a Niching Genetic Algorithm (NGA) to achieve subject-independent sign language recognition. Markov Chains model transitions between sign observations, capturing the probability of moving from one state to another. The NGA optimizes both the chain's structural parameters and transition probabilities, exploring a wide solution space. Context-Based Clearing (CBC) maintains population diversity, preventing premature convergence and preserving multiple effective optimization strategies. This approach reduces overfitting to a specific signer and enhances generalization. Experimental results show a significant reduction in classification errors and improved accuracy compared to traditional Markov models and other evolutionary optimization methods. The findings suggest that integrating NGA and CBC can substantially enhance sign language recognition systems, making them more robust and suitable for real-world, multi-signer applications.
