Imagine a security system that not only spots threats instantly but also records every alert permanently. That’s the idea behind a new study: a framework that fuses artificial intelligence with blockchain.

At its core is a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained to detect abnormal network traffic, using the CICIDS2017 dataset as a benchmark. When the CNN flags something suspicious, it creates an alert. Here, a permissioned Ethereum blockchain logs the alert and its metadata in an immutable ledger, ensuring no one can tamper with the evidence.

Automated smart contracts verify the alert’s validity and preserve data integrity, simplifying forensic analysis and regulatory compliance. Tests show high precision, few false positives, and real‑time response even under simulated attacks.

The outcome is a more transparent, robust, and auditable system, perfect for high‑stakes environments like banks or critical infrastructure. The authors propose scaling the blockchain and adding privacy layers to handle even larger data volumes.

The employed CNN model is a ResNet-18 variant, optimized for packet flow analysis with 1‑second time windows. Training used a 70/30 train‑test split, cross‑entropy loss, and Adam optimizer with a 0.001 learning rate. For the blockchain, a permissioned Hyperledger Besu network was selected, configured with IBFT2 consensus to lower block latency to roughly 200β€―ms. Smart contracts, written in Solidity 0.8, include SHA‑256 hash verification of AI payloads and timeout mechanisms for expired alerts. End‑to‑end latency (detection + logging) averaged 350β€―ms, well under the typical 1‑second threshold for intrusion detection systems. Robustness testing employed Metasploit to simulate DDoS and MITM attacks, confirming chain consistency under high load thanks to built‑in rate‑limiting on validator nodes.
