Imagine having a study buddy that never sleeps and helps you create perfect tests. That's what's happening thanks to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI)! A recent study found that GenAI can be a great ally in test creation, but with a condition: it must work together with human experts. Scientists used ChatGPT to create multiple-choice questions for social work interns. Then, a team of experts reviewed and improved the questions. The result? 75% of the AI-created questions needed modifications, but with human help, they became perfect. This shows that AI can be an excellent collaborator, but it still needs expert oversight. So, the next time you study, you might have a new tech-savvy friend by your side!

The study used a design-based research (DBR) approach to integrate GenAI into the assessment development process. This iterative approach allowed refining AI-generated questions through structured prompts and expert reviews. The main modifications focused on the clarity of response options, alignment with learning objectives, and question stems. The results showed that while GenAI can generate relevant questions, human intervention is essential to ensure content validity and psychometric quality. This study paves the way for further research on the validation and optimization of AI use in the assessment development process.
