Did you know that baker's yeast could give your immune system a boost? A recent study found that taking beta-glucan, a compound found in baker's yeast, for 6 weeks can alter the expression of 40 genes related to the innate immune response. Researchers involved 19 adults, divided into two groups: one took a beta-glucan supplement, the other a placebo. The results showed that beta-glucan affected the expression of mRNA associated with the immune response, improving the body's ability to react to infections and inflammation. This process was defined as 'immune training', different from immediate activation. In short, baker's yeast could be an unexpected ally for our health!
The study highlighted that baker's yeast beta-glucan specifically acts on Dectin-1 receptors, which are crucial for recognizing pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP) and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMP). This mechanism activates a more effective innate immune response, defined as 'immune training' because it involves a progressive increase in the expression of mRNA associated with myeloid cells. Unlike acquired immunity, which requires exposure to specific pathogens, immune training prepares the immune system to respond more quickly and effectively to a wide range of threats. The results suggest that beta-glucan supplementation could improve the immune response to both external infections and internal inflammation, contributing to maintaining homeostasis during rest periods.
