Sustainable and affordable housing is crucial for social and environmental development, especially in small island states. A recent study analyzed the key factors for implementing sustainable public housing (SAPH) in the Caribbean, finding that solutions must be tailored to the local context. Among the most important factors are risk reduction from the planning stage, energy efficiency, and transparency in construction processes. These elements not only improve the quality of life but also contribute to achieving the United Nations' sustainable development goals. Imagine living in a home that respects the environment and is also affordable: it's possible, but a well-structured plan is needed!

The study used a closed-ended questionnaire to collect data from construction industry experts in the Caribbean. The results were analyzed using a Structural Equation Model (SEM) to identify critical success factors (CSFs) specific to small island states. The CSFs were divided into three main categories: economic, energy efficiency and transparency, and construction execution. The most relevant category was found to be the implementation of risk reduction measures in the planning stages of projects. These preventive measures are crucial for mitigating natural disasters and promoting social, economic, and environmental sustainability. The study is based on the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) theory, which integrates these three aspects for a holistic approach to sustainable development.
