When it comes to solar energy, the first question is: how much will it grow in the coming years? A new study in Sustainability introduces a predictive model that promises extremely accurate answers. Researchers developed a model called CFIGGM, which combines a conformable fractional‑order accumulation operator with a grey model based on the incomplete gamma function. This approach can extract information even from very small data sets, typical of the early years of renewable technology adoption. To optimize the model’s non‑linear parameters, the team used the Whale Optimization Algorithm, inspired by the hunting behavior of whales. Tests on five consumption time‑series showed that CFIGGM outperforms traditional models, with an average error of just 0.07% on the training set and 0.78% on the test set. Applied to global data, the model forecasts that solar energy will keep growing, but at a slower pace in the future. These results can help governments and companies plan more effective investments and policies, showing how advanced mathematics and AI can make energy forecasts more reliable for a low‑carbon future.

The CFIGGM (Conformable Fractional Incomplete Gamma Grey Model) introduces a conformable fractional‑order accumulation operator, extending classical fractional calculus to better handle data memory. Coupled with an incomplete grey model based on the gamma function, the model can capture non‑linear trends even with limited observations. Parameter optimization is performed using the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), which mimics the hunting phases of whales, enhancing predictive performance. Experiments on five solar energy consumption time‑series revealed a MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) of 0.07% on the training set and 0.78% on the test set, outperforming comparative models such as GM(1,1) and the fractional‑order grey model. Applied to global solar energy consumption, the model forecasts continued growth with a decreasing rate, indicating that adoption may be approaching a plateau. These findings provide a robust foundation for energy policies and corporate strategies, highlighting the power of integrating fractional calculus, grey statistics, and bio‑inspired optimization.
