Tourism is expanding, but its environmental impact is becoming increasingly concerning, especially in rapidly growing countries like China. A recent study analyzed the environmental and socio-economic impact of three tourism sub-sectors: accommodation, entertainment, and food services. Using data from 2000 to 2020, researchers evaluated sustainability indicators such as greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and ecological footprint. The results show that the accommodation sector has the highest environmental impact, while entertainment improves human development with some ecological trade-offs. The food sector, however, seems to balance sustainability and environmental impact better. Regulation and taxation policies show different effects depending on the sector. This study highlights the need for specific strategies for each sector to reconcile tourism growth and sustainability.

The study used the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach to analyze both short- and long-term dynamics. The results revealed strong long-run cointegration among sectoral activities, environmental governance variables, and sustainability outcomes. The accommodation sector showed the highest environmental intensity, significantly increasing greenhouse gas emissions and ecological footprint. Entertainment, however, improved the Human Development Index (HDI) with moderate ecological trade-offs. The food sector demonstrated a relatively balanced contribution to sustainability, showing potential in mitigating air pollution. Regulation and taxation policies showed varying effectiveness: regulatory instruments consistently mitigated emissions and improved HDI, while fiscal tools yielded mixed results depending on the sectoral context and energy elasticity. Causality diagnostics uncovered complex feedback loops between tourism, energy consumption, and environmental performance, while ECO-F–HDI mapping revealed sector-specific trade-offs between ecological stress and human development gains.
