Have you ever wondered how complex metal objects are created? Metal additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, is changing the game. Unlike traditional methods, it allows for the creation of intricate shapes with precision. But how is the quality controlled? The answer lies in real-time temperature monitoring during production. This article compares three methods: computational, indirect, and direct. Each method has its pros and cons, but all aim to improve the quality of the produced parts. Thermal imaging, two-color pyrometry, and millimeter-wave radiometry are some of the technologies used. However, there are challenges to overcome, such as material emissivity variability and rapid changes in composition. The goal is to integrate these measurements into big data systems to improve production. With Industry 4.0, this technology could completely replace traditional metal casting methods.

In-situ temperature monitoring during metal additive manufacturing is crucial for ensuring the quality of the produced parts. Computational methods use algorithms to predict temperature based on collected data. Indirect methods, such as thermal imaging, measure temperature without direct contact with the material. Direct methods, on the other hand, use sensors that come into contact with the material. Thermal imaging is useful for measuring surface temperature but can be affected by material emissivity. Two-color pyrometry measures temperature based on radiation emitted at two different wavelengths, reducing the effect of emissivity. Millimeter-wave radiometry is useful for measuring temperature in environments with smoke or dust. However, all these methods must face challenges such as emissivity variability and rapid changes in material composition. Integrating these measurements into big data systems could improve production and make metal 3D printing more competitive compared to traditional methods.
