Have you ever thought about how toll rates influence your travel choices? A new study has found that differentiated tolls, which vary based on the time of day, type of vehicle, or payment method, can really make a difference. Experts surveyed drivers to understand how they react to these tolls and what drives them to choose alternative routes. The result? People are not all the same: there are savers, those who want more information, and traditionalists who prefer to avoid new things. Age, gender, vehicle type, and driving habits play an important role. Understanding these differences helps manage traffic better and make travel more efficient for everyone.

The study used both revealed preference (RP) and stated preference (SP) methods to assess users' willingness to accept the current differentiated toll scheme. The combination of these methods provided a comprehensive view of user behavior. The Structural Equation Model-Latent Class Logistics (SEM-LCL) revealed that users can be divided into three distinct groups: price-sensitive, information-oriented, and conservative. Price-sensitive users are particularly influenced by toll rate variations, while information-oriented users seek details on available options. Conservatives, on the other hand, tend to resist changes. Additionally, factors such as gender, age, driving experience, vehicle type, travel time, distance, and past experiences with differentiated tolls significantly influence the willingness to consider alternative routes. These results provide valuable insights for highway managers to optimize toll rates and implement dynamic flow regulation strategies.
