Cloud computing has revolutionized how organizations manage their infrastructure by providing scalable, on-demand services. However, the dispersed and open nature of cloud systems exposes them to a wide range of cyberattacks. While traditional intrusion detection systems, based on signatures or rules, struggle to adapt to complex threats, machine learning offers dynamic solutions for detecting both known and unknown attacks. A recent study compared the effectiveness of two ensemble methods, Voting Hard and Stacking, with individual machine learning classifiers such as Random Forest, Decision Tree, Gradient Boosting, XGBoost, Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machine, and Logistic Regression. Using the NSL-KDD dataset, researchers found that while standalone models perform well, the ensemble approach offers near-perfect accuracy (almost 100%) and greater resilience in terms of precision, recall, and F1-score. Additionally, through feature selection methods like Random Forest, Gain Information, and Manual Selection, the ensemble model maintains consistent performance even with smaller feature sets. These findings highlight how both individual and group machine learning methods can enhance intrusion detection systems for cloud infrastructures, offering implementation flexibility according to threat landscapes and computing limitations.
The ensemble approach in machine learning combines multiple models to improve overall performance. Voting Hard and Stacking are two popular techniques. Voting Hard aggregates the predictions of different classifiers, while Stacking uses the predictions of a base level to train a meta-classifier. The study used the NSL-KDD dataset, an improved version of the KDD Cup 1999 dataset, known for its redundancy and imbalance issues. Researchers evaluated the performance of the models using metrics such as precision, recall, and F1-score. Precision measures the model's ability to correctly identify positives, recall measures the ability to find all relevant positives, and the F1-score is the harmonic mean of precision and recall. Feature selection is a crucial process for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of machine learning models. Methods like Random Forest and Gain Information help identify the most relevant features, reducing data dimensionality and improving model performance.
