Imagine being fully awake but unable to move or speak. That's the reality for people with locked-in syndrome (LIS). These patients retain consciousness and cognitive functions but can't communicate. Thanks to brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), they can finally express themselves. A recent study analyzed EEG data from four LIS patients to assess their consciousness levels, referred to as normalized consciousness levels (NCL). Scientists extracted features based on frequency, complexity, and brain connectivity to determine the state of consciousness. Despite differences between patients, the method worked, detecting neural markers of consciousness. This helps improve diagnosis and determine the right time to start communicating with them. Consciousness is a complex concept, but in this study, NCL ranges from 0 to 1, indicating the likelihood that the patient is fully conscious.

The study used advanced EEG signal analysis techniques to extract specific features related to consciousness. These include signal complexity, measured through entropy, and functional connectivity, which assesses how different brain areas communicate. These markers were then combined into a predictive model to estimate NCL. Inter-patient variability was a significant challenge, but the approach proved robust in detecting common patterns. Moreover, the use of BCIs for communication not only improves patients' quality of life but also provides valuable data for research. Future directions include integrating other neuroimaging techniques and developing more sophisticated algorithms for even more accurate assessment.
