Have you ever thought about how much companies influence climate change? A recent study analyzed 18,545 companies in 28 countries between 2013 and 2024, discovering that those with strong governance and emission reduction policies (ERP) have a much lighter carbon footprint. Moreover, improving ERP relative to the industry average leads to a reduction in emissions over time. In short, good corporate management is crucial to avoiding greenwashing and ensuring that their climate commitments are credible. This study is a beacon for investors and regulators, reminding them that both promises and the structures that make them effective matter.
The study used an impressive dataset of 18,545 firm-year observations, covering 28 developed and emerging countries from 2013 to 2024. The analysis examined various greenhouse gas (GHG) performance metrics, corporate governance proxies, and emission intensity measures. The results were robust across multiple specifications, demonstrating that firms with stronger governance and higher ERP adoption exhibit significantly better emission intensity. Furthermore, firm-level trend regressions revealed that improvements in ERP relative to the sector average are associated with a reduction in emission intensity over time. This underscores the importance of robust governance in mitigating greenwashing risks and ensuring the credibility of corporate climate commitments.
