Have you ever wondered how your DevOps team structure affects performance? A recent study analyzed different DevOps team formations to find out which ones work best. Researchers surveyed 105 industry professionals and discovered that collaboration is the key to success. Teams with separate development and operations but high collaboration achieved the best results in deployment frequency, number of incidents, and service interruptions. Additionally, adopting DevOps improves efficiency in almost all team structures, except for those with limited collaboration. So, if you want to optimize your team's performance, focus on collaboration!
The study used a specific framework to analyze the relationship between team formation and performance. Researchers identified five key metrics: Deployment Frequency (DF), Number of Incidents (NoI), Number of Failures/Service Interruptions (NoF/NoSI), Lead Time (LT), and Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR). Among these, DF, NoI, and NoF/NoSI were the most influenced by intense collaboration between teams. In particular, TeamType2, which involves separate development and operations but high collaboration, showed significant effects in these metrics. TeamType3, on the other hand, achieved excellent results in LT and NoF/NoSI. MTTR improved across all team types, with TeamType4 performing the best. These findings suggest that while team formation type does not significantly influence LT, MTTR, and NoF/NoSI, deployment frequency is significantly higher for TeamType2 compared to TeamType4, highlighting the competitive advantage of high-collaboration structures.
