Imagine studying with a quiz and, every time you answer correctly, earning coins. Now those coins aren’t just a score—they can be spent to boost your hero in a shooter game. This is the core of a new experiment on making educational game rewards more appealing. Researchers built two Android apps: EduGym, a micro‑learning quiz, and EduShooter, a classic top‑down shooter. Coins earned in EduGym can be used to unlock weapons, outfits, and abilities in EduShooter. In practice, a lesson’s result becomes a concrete advantage in a leisure game. To test it, 48 students participated. Those who could spend the coins in EduShooter rated EduGym’s reward system more positively and found the overall gaming experience more rewarding. Moreover, participants saw their educational achievements as more meaningful because they were linked to real in‑game benefits. The study suggests that linking learning games to recreational games via a shared currency can boost motivation and perceived reward value—potentially turning study into a true video‑game adventure.

The integrated reward mechanism relies on a shared virtual currency, a concept well‑established in commercial games but rarely applied to education. From a cognitive perspective, Self‑Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) shows that perceived competence and autonomy boost intrinsic motivation. Transferring coins earned in a learning context to a recreational game satisfies both needs: competence is reinforced by the educational outcome, while autonomy is expressed in the choice of how to spend the coins. Moreover, research on transfer of learning indicates that contextual rewards can facilitate skill generalization, especially when transfer occurs between domains with shared elements, such as resource management. The experiment used an independent‑groups design, with post‑test measures of satisfaction, perceived reward value, and intention to keep playing. Results show a Cohen’s d = 0.68 effect on reward satisfaction, indicating a moderate‑to‑high impact. From a design standpoint, using two Android apps allows easy integration via RESTful APIs to sync coin balances. Data security is ensured by JWT tokens and TLS encryption, preventing balance manipulation. Finally, the cross‑game approach opens the door to broader educational ecosystems, where multiple learning modules can feed a single "reward hub," enhancing long‑term user retention.
