Have you ever thought about how important the perfect shape of wind turbine blades is? A recent study found that even small defects in the geometry of the blades can reduce the efficiency of wind turbines. Scientists used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and QBlade software to analyze how imperfections affect performance. After building the blades, they used laser triangulation to compare the actual shape with the designed one. The results? Deformations reduce the lift coefficient and increase the drag coefficient, worsening efficiency. Specifically, deformed blades lost 14.9% of their power compared to the original design. This study highlights the importance of rigorous quality control in wind turbine blade production and paves the way for new design strategies to compensate for these defects.

The study used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to analyze the impact of geometric variations on the aerodynamic performance of an airfoil used in the design of a 3 kW wind turbine blade. CFD is a powerful technique that allows simulating the airflow around an object and calculating the aerodynamic forces acting on it. In this case, scientists compared the CFD results with those obtained using QBlade software, a tool specifically designed for the design and analysis of wind turbines. After blade fabrication, experimental evaluation was performed using the laser triangulation technique, enabling the reconstruction of the deformed airfoils and their comparison with the original geometry. Additional CFD simulations were carried out on the manufactured airfoil to quantify the loss of aerodynamic efficiency due to geometrical deformations. The results showed that geometric deviations significantly affect the aerodynamic coefficients, generating a decrease in the lift coefficient and an increase in the drag coefficient, which negatively impacts the overall aerodynamic efficiency. Specifically, a 14.9% reduction in the rotor power coefficient was observed with the deformed airfoils compared to the original design. This study emphasizes the importance of quality control in wind turbine blade manufacturing processes and its impact on turbine performance. Furthermore, the findings can contribute to the development of design compensation strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of geometric imperfections on the aerodynamic performance of wind turbines.
