Imagine having to inspect thousands of containers a day: opening them all is impossible. The solution? X-rays guided by artificial intelligence. A new study compared YOLO models, from version 5 to the brand-new 11, alongside DETR and Faster R-CNN, to see which "sees" best inside cargo radiographs.
The main problem is that objects in containers overlap, have low contrast, or are very small. Standard loss functions struggle to distinguish a threat from harmless luggage. Researchers then integrated IoU-based loss functions (CIoU, DIoU, GIoU, WIoU) into YOLO networks and added Soft-NMS, a technique that prevents discarding valid detections too close to each other.
The result? YOLOv11 enhanced with WIoU and Soft-NMS hit 98.44% mAP@50, beating all rivals. This means the AI locates objects with near-perfect precision, even in the chaos of a packed container. For global logistics, it's a breakthrough: faster checks, shorter queues at ports, and safer goods traveling. Next time you order something from across the world, remember: an "X-ray algorithm" might have already screened its journey.
