Have you ever wondered how computers make decisions? Sometimes, they can be influenced by biases in the data they analyze, especially when it comes to graph neural networks (GNNs). These tools are powerful for handling complex data, but they can amplify inequalities. A new study introduces FairCNCB, a method that uses causal analysis and balancing to reduce biases. Imagine generating counterfactual samples to mitigate distortions and calculating weights for minority groups. The results? Improvements of 2% in performance and 5% in fairness. A step forward towards a fairer future!

FairCNCB combines two main modules to improve fairness in GNNs. The first module uses causal analysis to identify and mitigate biases related to sensitive attributes. Through an adversarial network, it generates counterfactual samples that help balance distortions. The second module calculates specific weights for minority groups and reconstructs the loss function to ensure fairness among different sensitive attribute classes. This synergy optimizes GNNs from multiple dimensions, improving both performance and fairness. Experiments on three datasets demonstrated significant improvements in performance metrics (AUC, F1, ACC) and fairness metrics (△sp, △eo).
