Imagine having to solve a real-world problem, like managing the flow of people on a train platform. Engineering students are discovering that technology can be a valuable ally! In a Challenge-Based Education (CBE) course, two student teams used a digital dashboard to identify, define, and model such problems. The dashboard not only provided real-time feedback but also helped students work together, adapting and repurposing the tools at their disposal. Using data, simulations, and modeling techniques, students created mathematical representations to answer guiding questions. This approach enhanced self-regulated learning and interdisciplinary collaboration, showing how technology can make math more concrete and applicable. In short, math isn't just theory; it can be a powerful tool for solving real-world problems!

The dashboard used in the study is an example of how digital tools can facilitate active learning. Through data analysis and simulations, students can immediately see the impact of their mathematical choices. This process, known as 'instrumentalization', allows students to adapt digital tools to their specific needs. Additionally, the dashboard promoted interdisciplinary collaboration, combining knowledge from mathematics, physics, and ethics. Students were able to work on real-world problems, making learning more meaningful and engaging. This approach not only improves technical skills but also enhances teamwork and critical thinking abilities.
