Imagine trying to capture a flash of light in a sea of noise. That's exactly the challenge astronomers face when trying to observe very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays from space. These gamma rays, which carry information about extreme astrophysical phenomena, are difficult to detect directly. Ground-based telescopes like the Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) in India capture Cherenkov light produced when gamma rays interact with Earth's atmosphere. However, this light is often drowned out by background noise from cosmic rays. To solve this problem, researchers have developed PyMAP, a Python-based data analysis package. PyMAP uses advanced methods and machine learning algorithms to extract the gamma-ray signal from the noise. But that's not all! They've also introduced a new image cleaning method called DIOS (Denoising Image of Shower), which improves MACE telescope sensitivity by about 25%. This means we can see the most energetic phenomena in the universe more clearly.

The PyMAP package was developed to analyze data from the MACE telescope, which is operational in Hanle, India. It uses advanced methods and machine learning algorithms to extract the gamma-ray signal from a given source direction. One of the most innovative aspects of PyMAP is the new image cleaning method called DIOS (Denoising Image of Shower). This method has been compared to the standard cleaning method and has shown a significant improvement in telescope sensitivity. DIOS works by reducing background noise in images of atmospheric showers, allowing for better identification of gamma-ray signals. This improvement is crucial for studying high-energy astrophysical phenomena, such as supermassive black holes and supernovae. Additionally, the use of Python makes PyMAP accessible and flexible, allowing researchers to customize data analysis according to their specific needs.
