Have you ever thought about how important the air you breathe at home is? A new study reveals that displacement ventilation systems can keep the air cleaner, especially in the presence of airborne particles. Thanks to advanced simulations, researchers have discovered that the airflow rate and the arrangement of vents influence the effectiveness of these systems. At low airflow rates, a stable layer is created that traps particles, while at higher rates the air mixes, reducing effectiveness. Interestingly, the position of the vents doesn't make much difference. So, for healthier air, it's better to maintain a moderate flow and a strategic arrangement of vents.

The study uses large eddy simulation (LES) to analyze air behavior in a generic indoor space. CO2 concentration is often used as an indicator of air quality, but here a correlation with respiratory particles was also found. Researchers tested airflow rates from 0.01 to 0.06 m³/s and two vent configurations: in-line and staggered. At low flows, the clean air layer remains stable, while at higher flows the air mixes, reducing effectiveness. The position of the vents does not significantly influence the results, suggesting that jet strength and room geometry are more important factors.
