Have you ever wondered how rainfall might change in the future? A recent study analyzed daily maximum precipitation on Prince Edward Island using advanced climate models. Scientists examined three scenarios: optimistic, intermediate, and pessimistic, based on different greenhouse gas emissions. The results show a significant increase in extreme rainfall, especially towards the east. For example, in the period 2071-2100, the worst-case scenario predicts an 84% increase compared to the past. This data is crucial for planning safer and more sustainable infrastructure. Imagine living in a world where heavy rains are more frequent: how do we prepare?

The study used a max-stable process model to analyze the spatial characteristics of daily maximum precipitation. Data were extracted from 11 global climate models, considering three climate change scenarios: ssp126 (low emissions), ssp245 (intermediate emissions), and ssp585 (high emissions). The historical reference period was from 1971 to 2000, while the future periods analyzed were 2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100. Spatial trend analysis revealed a west-to-east gradient throughout the study area. Return levels of 25 years were predicted for all projections using a spatial generalized extreme value model fitted to the historical period. The results showed that topography should be included as a covariate in the spatial extreme model. Among the 134 grid points used in the study, the predicted return level for the historical period was 94 mm. Compared to the immediate period, there is an increase of 47%, 53%, and 50% for the low, intermediate, and high emission scenarios, respectively. For the intermediate period, the increase is 43%, 59%, and 56% for the low, intermediate, and high emission scenarios, respectively. For the far future period, the increase is 49%, 48%, and 84% for the low, intermediate, and high emission scenarios, respectively. This study provides valuable information for urban planning, financial risk management, and the development of sustainable infrastructure.
