Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are already a step towards a greener future, but how can we make them even more efficient? A new study proposes an energy management system based on hierarchical reinforcement learning. This approach divides control into two levels: one for managing engine torque and another for gear selection. Thanks to this division, the system manages to improve fuel consumption, reducing it by 3.06% compared to traditional methods. Additionally, it is faster and suitable for real-time use, perfect for complex urban driving conditions. Imagine having a navigator that not only tells you the route but also optimizes every single movement of the engine to save fuel. This is the future of hybrid cars!

The proposed system uses a two-level architecture: the upper level employs the soft actor-critic (SAC) algorithm for continuous control of engine torque, while the lower level uses a deep Q-network (DQN) for discrete optimization of gear selection. This hierarchical approach allows managing both discrete and continuous control variables, overcoming the limitations of traditional methods. Offline training and online simulation demonstrate that the system achieves energy efficiency performance comparable to dynamic programming (DP), with a significant improvement in computational efficiency. This makes the system suitable for real-time implementation, crucial for practical applications in hybrid cars. Additionally, the system has been tested under complex and prolonged driving conditions, demonstrating stability and adaptability.
