A recent study investigated how vocational IT students use generative artificial intelligence to learn programming. Over a hundred pupils with varying skill levels were surveyed, revealing that ChatGPT is the most popular tool. Students rely on it for code suggestions, quick error fixes, and tailoring their learning path. The benefits are clear: lessons become more interactive, mistakes are resolved fast, and motivation rises. Yet, the research warns that over‑reliance may weaken fundamental programming skills, limiting independent problem‑solving. Authors stress the crucial role of teachers, who must steer students toward responsible and ethical AI use, integrating it as a supplement to traditional explanations rather than a replacement. The study also proposes further research at university level to compare outcomes. In short, AI can be a powerful classroom ally, provided learners stay in charge of their own education.

The study employed a cross‑sectional design using a questionnaire administered to 124 vocational IT students, divided into three competence levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced). The questionnaire featured 25 items covering usage frequency, AI tool types (ChatGPT, Copilot, Bard), usage contexts (exercises, projects, code review), and perceived benefits and risks. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and independent‑samples t‑tests to compare differences between competence groups. Results reveal a significant difference (p < 0.01) in ChatGPT usage frequency between advanced students (mean 4.2/5) and beginners (mean 2.8). Qualitative analysis of open‑ended responses shows that 78% of participants consider AI useful for rapid error correction, while 42% fear a loss of autonomous debugging skills. Limitations include reliance on self‑reporting, potential social desirability bias, and the absence of a longitudinal follow‑up to assess long‑term learning impacts. Nonetheless, the study provides an empirical foundation for designing instructional interventions that integrate AI in a balanced way, fostering metacognition and critical awareness among students toward generative tools.
