Hydraulic motors are crucial in high-power drive systems for heavy-duty vehicles and industrial machinery due to their high power density. Radial piston hydraulic motors are commonly used in high-load applications, while digital hydraulic motors are emerging as potential replacements. However, challenges like torque pulsation and inefficient flow distribution persist in traditional designs. A new study proposes a digital radial piston hydraulic motor using several switching valves to distribute hydraulic oil, along with a comprehensive strategy to mitigate flow pulsation and improve hydraulic transmission efficiency. The authors systematically investigated the intrinsic torque pulsation characteristics, revealing their dependence on valve actuation patterns and load dynamics. A novel torque pulsation mitigation design was introduced, valve modeling and efficiency evaluation were developed, and a phase-correction-based flow distribution method was conducted by optimizing valve sequencing. Simulations and experiments demonstrated the feasibility of this solution. In conclusion, the study provides valuable insights for the design and control of radial piston digital hydraulic motors, offering a potential solution for heavy-duty traction applications.

The proposed digital radial piston hydraulic motor uses a series of switching valves to distribute hydraulic oil more efficiently than traditional designs. The flow pulsation mitigation strategy is based on optimizing valve sequencing, which reduces torque oscillations and improves motor stability. Additionally, the developed valve model allows evaluating system efficiency under different load and speed conditions. Simulations and experiments demonstrated that the new design significantly reduces torque pulsation, improving overall motor performance. This innovative approach could open new possibilities for the use of digital hydraulic motors in high-power applications, such as heavy-duty vehicles and industrial machinery.
