Imagine having to measure how 'smooth' or 'rough' a function is. In mathematical analysis, Riesz potentials are tools that link a function's regularity to its integrability. It was known these tools work well for function spaces 'far' from L¹ (the space of simply integrable functions), but they struggled near L¹.

Recent discoveries showed that if functions satisfy a special 'co-canceling' condition — a kind of mutual cancellation of derivatives — the gap closes: inequalities hold perfectly even in L¹. The new work, just posted on arXiv, takes a decisive step forward: it proves this magic isn't an L¹ privilege. It holds for entire families of function spaces, including Orlicz and Lorentz-Zygmund spaces, which are like more flexible 'cousins' of L¹.

Why does it matter? Because these spaces appear everywhere: in fluid dynamics, control theory, even in deep learning when studying irregular gradients. Having valid estimates in such general contexts means building more robust models, proving existence of solutions for tough equations, and better understanding the limits of our numerical tools.

Mathematics once again shows that hidden symmetries — here mutual cancellation — can turn an obstacle into a bridge.

The work extends results by Van Schaftingen, Hernández-Raita-Spector, and Stolyarov, who established equivalence between Sobolev inequalities and Riesz potential estimates in L¹ under co-canceling condition. The co-canceling condition for a k-th order differential operator A requires ∑_{|α|=k} A_α ξ^α = 0 to imply ξ = 0 for ξ ≠ 0, ensuring a weak form of ellipticity.

The key innovation is using real interpolation theory and rearrangement functions to transfer the result to rearrangement-invariant (r.i.) Banach spaces. Let X be an r.i. space with Boyd indices p_X, q_X such that 1 < p_X ≤ q_X < ∞. If operator A is co-canceling, then for every f ∈ X with Af ∈ X we have the estimate
‖I_α f‖_Y ≤ C ‖f‖_X,
where I_α is the Riesz potential of order α and Y is the r.i. space associated via the Sobolev index. The borderline case near L¹ corresponds to p_X → 1, where constants remain controlled thanks to the cancellation structure.

Immediate applications include estimates for non-elliptic PDE systems (e.g., Maxwell equations, incompressible fluid dynamics) and regularity for minimizers of non-convex functionals with non-standard growth.
