Imagine training an AI without letting it interact with the real world. That's the idea behind offline reinforcement learning (RL), where agents learn from pre-collected datasets. But these datasets often contain sensitive information. Enter PrivORL, a method that generates privacy-protected synthetic datasets. The approach uses diffusion models and DP-SGD to create data similar to the originals without revealing secrets. The result? Smart agents trained safely, useful for navigation, robotics, and more. Thanks to curiosity-driven pre-training, the synthetic data is diverse and faithful. Tests on five sensitive datasets show excellent results. A step forward for responsible, privacy-safe AI.
PrivORL represents a significant innovation in machine learning, combining two key concepts: offline reinforcement learning and differential privacy. Offline reinforcement learning allows agents to learn from historical data without directly interacting with the environment, reducing costs and risks. However, the datasets used often contain sensitive information, creating potential privacy vulnerabilities. PrivORL addresses this challenge by using diffusion models to synthesize new data, preserving privacy through differential adjustment. The method involves a pre-training phase on public datasets, followed by fine-tuning with DP-SGD on sensitive data. An innovative element is curiosity-driven pre-training, which uses feedback from a curiosity module to increase the diversity of synthetic data. This approach improves the fidelity and utility of the generated datasets, as demonstrated by evaluations on five sensitive offline RL datasets. The results indicate that PrivORL outperforms existing baselines in terms of data quality and privacy protection, opening new possibilities for safe applications in critical sectors such as autonomous navigation and robotics.
