Strawberries are a popular fruit, but diseases can drastically reduce yields. Farmers need a fast, accurate tool to spot early infection signs. This study created an AI model based on YOLOv8, a cutting‑edge neural network. To boost sensitivity to tiny disease spots, an ultra‑small detection head (32×32 pixels) was added. A convolution‑attention fusion module (CAFM) was also integrated, combining local analysis with global vision, making the model robust in varying light and complex backgrounds. The dataset contains 3,146 images of seven different diseases at various stages. The optimized model achieves a mAP50 of 0.96, outperforming YOLOv5 and Faster R‑CNN in recall and F1 score. For practical use, a PyQT5 interface processes photos, videos, and live camera input in real time, highlighting infected areas with colored boxes and category labels. This lightweight, user‑friendly tool helps growers intervene early, advancing precision agriculture.

YOLOv8 is a real‑time object detection network that uses a deep convolutional backbone to extract multi‑scale features. In strawberries, the main challenge is the tiny size of disease spots, often less than 10 pixels in a 1080p image. To tackle this, an ultra‑small detection head of 32×32 pixels was added, reducing the feature map size and allowing the model to focus on finer details. Simultaneously, the CAFM (Convolution‑Attention Fusion Module) merges two mechanisms: traditional convolution, which captures local information such as edges and textures, and attention, which lets the model assign different weights to global regions of interest. Attention is implemented via a SE (Squeeze‑and‑Excitation) network, computing a weight vector for each feature channel, emphasizing those most relevant for disease classification. Combining these components creates a richer, less noisy data flow, resilient to environmental noise like shadows or soil color variations. Experimental results show a 4% increase in mAP over the base YOLOv8, with significant gains in small‑spot precision. Moreover, the PyQT5 interface, built on Qt5, leverages GPU acceleration for real‑time processing, achieving over 30 fps on mid‑range GPUs. This approach makes the algorithm not only more accurate but also field‑ready, where rapid response is critical.
