Imagine being able to send files so secure that even quantum computers couldn't crack them. It's possible thanks to a combination of quantum key distribution (QKD) and one-time pad (OTP) encryption. A team of researchers at Politehnica University of Bucharest has created a practical file transfer application that promises unconditional security. They tested the system on their QKD infrastructure, proving it's feasible for real-world use. QKD leverages the laws of quantum physics to exchange secure cryptographic keys, while OTP uses a unique key for each message, making decryption without the key practically impossible. This approach could revolutionize data security, especially for highly sensitive information.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) leverages the principles of quantum mechanics to ensure that any attempt to intercept the cryptographic keys is detected. When two parties want to communicate securely, they generate a pair of correlated quantum keys. According to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, any attempt to measure or intercept these keys alters their state, making the interception evident. Once the keys are generated, one-time pad (OTP) encryption is used, a perfectly secure encryption method if the key is random and as long as the message. Each bit of the message is combined with a bit of the key using an XOR operation, producing a ciphertext that cannot be decrypted without the original key. This method has been proven to be theoretically unbreakable, provided the key is kept secret and used only once.
