Imagine browsing the web and, just as you are about to click a link, an invisible system blocks a cyberattack before you even notice it. It sounds like science fiction, but it is the reality of modern security! With the rise of artificial intelligence, hackers are also using AI to create increasingly sophisticated and fast attacks. To meet this challenge, experts are bringing defense right 'close to you' using CDNs (Content Delivery Networks).

CDNs act like ultra-fast distribution centers that bring web content closer to users. Today, these networks do more than just deliver data; they are becoming intelligent bodyguards. Thanks to AI, they can analyze traffic in real-time, distinguishing between a real user and a malicious bot trying to mimic a human. These systems can block massive attacks (the famous DDoS) or protect APIs, which are the channels through which apps communicate with each other. In essence, AI acts like a high-tech referee monitoring the field to ensure everything runs smoothly. It is a continuous technological arms race where response speed is everything!

The research analyzes how the integration of artificial intelligence into Edge Computing infrastructures and CDNs is transforming web application security. The core of the strategy lies in the shift from static defenses to adaptive ones. Traditionally, Web Application Firewalls (WAF) relied on predefined rules (if X happens, then block Y). However, modern attacks, often driven by machine learning models, can constantly vary to evade such rules.

New defenses focus on four fundamental pillars: 1) Behavior-based API and Web Application Protection (WAAP), which looks for behavioral anomalies rather than just known virus signatures; 2) Adaptive DDoS mitigation, capable of distinguishing between legitimate traffic spikes and attacks aimed at saturating the server; 3) Advanced Bot Management, which uses learning models to identify bots attempting human-mimicry; 4) Encrypted traffic analysis, which allows for identifying threats without violating user privacy by analyzing communication patterns instead of the content itself.

Despite the advantages, such as reduced latency and faster incident response, the research highlights new risks: 'odel poisoning' (where hackers attempt to maliciously train the defense AI) and the need for Explainable AI (XAI) to understand why a system blocked a specific traffic flow. The future challenge will be creating autonomous, multi-agent defense systems capable of self-healing in real-time.
