Imagine a world where trains travel faster, are safer, and communicate with each other like in an online game. This is what the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) promises, the new global standard for railway communications. Unlike the old GSM-R system, FRMCS offers high-speed data, extreme reliability, and almost instant response times. But how does it work? Thanks to virtualization and cloud computing, railway applications can be managed more efficiently, like pieces of a digital puzzle. Scientists have created APIs (programming interfaces) to make these applications communicate, and they have even mathematically verified that everything works perfectly. In short, the future of trains is already here, and it promises to revolutionize the way we travel!
The Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) represents a significant step forward compared to the traditional GSM-R system. Thanks to Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and the 5G cloud-native architecture, FRMCS can offer superior performance in terms of data transmission speed, reliability, and latency. Scientists have identified the main management functionalities of virtualized FRMCS applications through the analysis of different use cases. These functionalities have then been synthesized as RESTful services, which communicate with each other through APIs. The formal verification of the APIs was carried out by modeling the management states of an FRMCS application instance from different perspectives, mathematically demonstrating that the state models are synchronized over time. Furthermore, the latency introduced by the APIs has been evaluated through emulation, confirming the efficiency of the system.
