Did you know that dairy cows can benefit from a little extra help during the transition period, right after giving birth? A recent study found that administering vitamins and minerals through injections can make a big difference! Cows that received a combination of vitamins (A, B-complex, Dβ, E) and minerals (copper, manganese, selenium, and zinc) produced higher-quality colostrum and milk. Their milk had more fat and protein and contained more immunoglobulins, which are crucial for the calves' immune system. Additionally, these cows had less oxidative stress and inflammation, meaning better health for them and their offspring. Imagine giving cows a kind of 'supercharge' to help them get through a tough period and ensure more nutritious milk for the calves. Isn't it fascinating how science can make a difference in the agricultural world?
The study involved 24 multiparous cross-bred cows divided into four groups: control, multivitamin (MV), multi-mineral (MM), and combined (MMMV). Intramuscular injections were administered at critical points before and after calving. The results showed that the MMMV group had the best outcomes, with colostrum and milk richer in fat and protein, and higher levels of insulin-like growth factors and immunoglobulins. Additionally, mammary health improved, with reduced somatic cell counts and a normalized neutrophil-to-macrophage ratio. Phagocytic activity of both cell types increased, and there was a shift in the cytokine profile towards an anti-inflammatory state. Oxidative stress was reduced, as indicated by decreased activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in the milk whey. These results suggest that parenteral supplementation with vitamins and minerals can be an effective strategy to enhance cow health and milk quality.
