Learning web programming can seem daunting, but what if a virtual assistant helped you with interactive exercises? A team of researchers has developed a system called WPLAS, which offers
The WPLAS system uses a Python-based exercise generation algorithm using regular expressions. This algorithm identifies meaningful code segments in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that reflect the interactive behavior of front-end development. The generated exercises cover a wide range of topics, from basic web programming concepts to more advanced subjects like game development. Automatic evaluation of answers is based on string-to-string comparison with predefined solutions, ensuring immediate feedback to students. Experiments conducted have shown that the system is effective in facilitating self-learning, with most students able to correctly solve the exercises. Additionally, the ChatGPT test showed that AI can be a useful support tool, although it is not yet able to find all correct solutions. In the future, researchers plan to enhance the system to handle non-unique answers, making learning even more flexible and personalized.
