Traffic in cities is a nightmare for everyone. But what if we could combine roundabouts and traffic lights in a smart way? A recent study used advanced simulations to find the perfect distance between these two types of intersections. The result? If they are too close (less than 50 meters), traffic jams occur. If they are more than 100 meters apart, they work almost as if they were isolated. Additionally, an even distribution of traffic (50:50) helps reduce congestion at lower speeds, but worsens the situation when there are too many cars. Scientists also created a predictive model that calculates travel times with an accuracy of 90.9%. In short, planning the position of roundabouts and traffic lights well can make a big difference!

The study used the VISSIM software to simulate various traffic scenarios, considering variables such as peak-hour traffic volume, flow distribution, and intersection spacing. Researchers found that congestion occurs when roundabouts and traffic lights are too close due to the 'spillback' phenomenon, where traffic builds up and spills back. On the other hand, greater distances reduce this effect, allowing for smoother traffic flow. The regression model developed integrates simulation data to predict travel times based on traffic volume, flow ratios, and intersection distance. This model demonstrated high predictive power, with an R-squared of 0.909, indicating that 90.9% of the variability in travel times can be explained by the considered variables.
