The EPA Facility Registry Service (FRS) is the national catalog that gathers information on more than 140,000 industrial plants, research centers, and waste disposal sites across the United States. Recently, a new dataset called ER_CERCLIS has been launched, aimed at making hazardous waste management more transparent.
Thanks to ER_CERCLIS, anyone can access details on the quantity, type, and destination of chemical waste produced by each registered facility. The data are public, downloadable in CSV format, and can be linked to interactive maps. This means students, journalists, and activists can, for example, see where the most polluting sites are located or track emission trends over time.
The value of such an open registry is huge: it fuels scientific research, helps authorities plan more targeted interventions, and enables communities to demand environmental accountability. Moreover, integration with other federal databases makes it possible to crossβreference information on air, water, and soil quality.
In practice, ER_CERCLIS turns complex data into a tool for oversight and awareness, showing how digital transparency can become an ally in the fight against pollution.
