Forests are like nature's superheroes: they protect us, provide oxygen, and host countless species. But how do we measure their true value? Until now, valuation methods often oversimplified things, ignoring differences in forest structure and quality. Now, a new study proposes a revolutionary model: the Effective Forest Area (EFA). This model combines ecosystem stability with the Remote Sensing-based Ecological Index (RSEI) to give a more accurate value to the services forests provide. The case study is Heshan, a Chinese city that has seen an increase in forest area but a decrease in quality. The results? Traditional methods overestimated the value of forests, especially in rural and tourist areas. EFA helps us better understand how to manage forests for the future.

The EFA model integrates land cover dynamics with transitions in the Remote Sensing-based Ecological Index (RSEI). This innovative approach considers the stability of forest areas, evaluating not only the quantity but also the quality of forests. The case study in Heshan showed that, despite a 10% increase in forest area between 2010 and 2020, forest quality decreased due to unsustainable management practices. Spontaneously developed rural areas saw the highest overestimation of ecosystem service value (35%), followed by industrial tourism areas (29%) and urbanization areas (26%). This study underscores the importance of considering both the structure and quality of forests for an accurate evaluation of their services.
