Imagine sailing in the open sea and knowing exactly how much wind to expect. Thanks to a new technology, this could become a reality! Scientists have developed MMamba, a system that reconstructs ocean surface wind speed even when data is missing. It uses multimodal data and an advanced architecture to be both precise and fast. MMamba outperforms traditional methods, reducing errors by 21% in high-wind conditions. Additionally, there's a lightweight version, MMamba-L, perfect for resource-limited devices. This advancement is crucial for predicting extreme weather and studying ocean-atmosphere interactions.

MMamba is based on a multimodal dataset called MWSID, which integrates 12 auxiliary forecasting variables. The MMamba framework combines two main modules: the Multimodal Feature Extraction and the OSWS Reconstruction. The former uses mutual information (MI) theory to optimize feature selection, while the latter employs Attention-Mamba-2 within a Residual-in-Residual-Dense architecture for efficient inpainting. Experiments have shown that MMamba outperforms MambaIR, the state-of-the-art, with an RMSE of 0.5481 m/s and an SSIM of 0.9820. Additionally, MMamba-L, with only 0.22 million parameters, is suitable for resource-limited devices.
