Industrial environments often rely on analog control panels for their reliability. However, automating their reading is a challenge due to varying designs, lighting conditions, and precision requirements. A new study tested vision-language models (VLM) to address this issue. Three approaches were compared: general-purpose models, specialized models, and lightweight models for portable devices. The results? The fine-tuned GPT-4o model won the race, with minimal errors for continuous controls and maximum accuracy for discrete ones. Additionally, it proved to be less sensitive to command variations, making it more reliable. General-purpose models worked well without training, but lightweight models showed significant limitations. This study paves the way for the practical use of AI in industrial contexts, balancing precision, efficiency, and data needs.

The study used two prompting strategies: the Holistic-Thought Protocol (HTP) and the Sequential Chain-of-Thought (CoT). HTP considers the entire control panel at once, while CoT analyzes it step by step. Fine-tuned models showed greater robustness with both strategies, while general-purpose models had variable performance. Additionally, edge-computing-optimized models showed significant limitations, especially in low-light conditions or with complex controls. This suggests that while edge computing is promising for industrial automation, further improvements are needed to make it reliable in all scenarios.
