When extracting ore from very deep mines, the rock surrounding the opening can collapse under high ground pressure. To prevent such failures, engineers studied how to optimise the size of the "stope", the void created for the ore. First they tested rock mechanical properties in the lab, then designed six possible configurations using the Matthews chart method. With FLAC3D, a 3‑D simulation software, they reproduced the conditions of the Ruihai gold mine and simulated the "follow‑filling continuous mining" method. By analysing stress, displacement and plastic zones, they found that in good‑quality rock the optimal dimensions are 20β€―m high, 15β€―m wide and 80β€―m long. In zones crossed by faults or with many joints, a safer configuration is 20β€―m high, 10β€―m wide and 70β€―m long. The continuous back‑filling method reduces ground pressure, enhancing stability and safety. These findings give a theoretical basis for safer, more efficient deep‑resource extraction.

The simulations were performed with FLAC3D, a finite‑element code solving equilibrium equations for elastoplastic materials. The rock mass was modeled as a continuous medium with anisotropic properties, including Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and Mohr‑Coulomb failure criteria. Boundary conditions replicated the geostatic load at roughly 1500β€―m depth, with negligible thermal gradient. The "follow‑filling" method advances the excavation front sequentially, back‑filling with support material (e.g., cementitious paste) immediately after the machine passes, reducing the plastic deformation zone. Stress curve analysis showed a 12β€―% reduction in lateral compression peak compared to traditional methods, while the plastic deformation zone contracted by 18β€―%. Moreover, the factor of safety (FS) increased from 1.2 to 1.6 in the optimized configurations, indicating higher resistance to unexpected loads. These findings suggest that combining reduced dimensions in fractured zones with continuous back‑filling can effectively mitigate instability risk, offering a more sustainable approach for deep‑resource extraction.
