Trains are a cornerstone of urban transport, but rising CO2 emissions are becoming a problem. What if we could make them more sustainable? A new study proposes a hybrid system that combines solar and wind energy with batteries and supercapacitors. This system, called HESS, is designed to efficiently and environmentally friendly power railway stations. Batteries offer a large storage capacity, while supercapacitors allow for quick charging, perfect for trains. The system uses an intelligent strategy called F-EMS to optimize the energy flow between renewable sources, storage, and trains. Simulation results show that this system works well under various conditions, reducing the environmental impact of trains.

The proposed system combines photovoltaic and wind energy with a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) composed of batteries and supercapacitors. Batteries, with their high energy density, provide long-term energy storage, while supercapacitors, with their high power density and large number of charge and discharge cycles, are ideal for providing rapid power peaks. The fuzzy logic-based energy management strategy (F-EMS) optimizes the energy flow between renewable sources, the storage system, and the trains. This strategy takes into account various parameters, such as DC bus voltage, battery and supercapacitor charge levels, and train energy demand. Simulations performed with MATLAB/Simulink have demonstrated the effectiveness of the system under various energy production and train demand conditions, showing a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and an improvement in energy efficiency.
