Climate change is making droughts more frequent and intense, threatening water supplies and agriculture. A recent study examined the Naoli River Basin using the SWAT‑PLUS model and copula functions to understand how meteorological, hydrological and agricultural droughts spread.

Researchers calculated three indices: SPAEI (precipitation vs evapotranspiration), SRI (runoff) and SSMI (soil moisture). Using travel‑time theory they identified drought periods and, with copulas, modeled the joint probabilities of these events. The results show that the SWAT model accurately reproduces water flow (R² > 0.75, NSE > 0.97) and the PLUS module precisely describes land‑use (accuracy > 0.93, Kappa > 0.85).

Future projections suggest forest expansion and farmland reduction, while urban areas grow under high‑emission scenarios (SSP585). Meteorological drought risk will rise under moderate‑emission pathways, but hydrological and agricultural drought trends are more mixed. During extreme meteorological drought, the chance of an equally extreme agricultural drought doubles, from 0.12 to 0.24. These insights support more resilient water‑management strategies for the coming decades.

The SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model is a hydrological simulation system based on mass‑balance equations for each sub‑basin. In this study it was coupled with the PLUS module, which uses satellite‑derived classification algorithms to dynamically update land‑cover. Copula functions, on the other hand, allow the description of non‑linear dependence between random variables, overcoming the limits of traditional linear correlations.

For selecting climate‑hydrology models, the Taylor diagram was employed, comparing correlation, root‑mean‑square error (RMSE) and variance against reference observations, ensuring the choice of the five most reliable CMIP6 models (r = 0.80, RMSE = 26.15). Simulations were run for SSP245 (moderate emissions) and SSP585 (high emissions) scenarios, providing a spectrum of possible basin evolutions.

Bayesian conditional probability analysis revealed that under SSP585 the chance of an extreme agricultural drought doubles compared to SSP245, highlighting heightened crop vulnerability. These findings point to the need for targeted adaptation strategies, such as drought‑resistant crops, integrated water resource management, and urban planning that limits expansion onto critical agricultural lands.
